Golfers and local community score at annual Red Cross Cup

June 26, 2019-On June 24, the American Red Cross of Northeast Ohio spent a day on the links as they hosted the annual Red Cross Cup at Canterbury Golf Club for a day of friendship, food and golf. Individual and team golfers who placed that day weren’t the only winners. Proceeds from the event will benefit local families affected by disasters.

The event began with the annual meeting of the Greater Cleveland Chapter board of directors, with breakfast provided by members of the Tiffany Circle. The breakfast was held in honor of the late Frann Zverina, a longtime Red Cross supporter.

Following the meeting, the fun and excitement was ready to get underway.

Before the golfers began play, Jensen Lewis, former Cleveland Indians pitcher and current co-host of the Indians Live broadcast on Fox Sports Ohio, spoke and answered questions regarding the current state of the 2019 team.

Perhaps through the power of late golf legends Arnold Palmer, Walter Hagen, Ben Hogan and Bobby Jones, the rain held off and the golfers were able to enjoy playing 18 holes on a nationally recognized top 100 golf course in the United States. Participants also had an opportunity to win the use of a new vehicle as part of the hole-in-one contest sponsored by Deacon’s Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM.

After the score cards were reviewed and scores tallied, golfers were recognized in two categories, scramble and competitive:

Following the day on the greens and the award ceremony, golfers enjoyed food, drinks and firsthand analysis from Cleveland sports greats Hanford Dixon and Kevin Mack of the Cleveland Browns, Jim Chones and Campy Russell of Cleveland Cavaliers and Jonathan Wells of The Ohio State Buckeyes. The question-and-answer segment was emceed by Bruce Drennan of Fox Sports Ohio.

Red Cross Cup to tee off at Canterbury Golf Club

Golfers invited to play at annual event June 24

The annual Red Cross Cup at Canterbury Golf Club promises to be a fantastic day filled with friendship, food and, of course, golf. The event is set at what has been nationally recognized as one of the top 100 golf courses in the United States and one of the finest in Ohio.

The day will begin off the course with the annual meeting of the Board of Directors of the Greater Cleveland Chapter of the American Red Cross, with breakfast provided by members of the Tiffany Circle, in honor of long-time Red Cross supporter, the late Frann Zverina.

Before the shotgun start, retired Cleveland Indians pitcher Jensen Lewis, the current co-host of the Indians Live broadcasts on Fox Sports Ohio will share some thoughts about the current state of the team. And his Fox Sports Ohio colleague, Bruce Drennen will add his unmistakable voice to the event.

After playing 18 holes, golfers will enjoy 19^th hole festivities on the clubhouse patio, including food and drink, a silent and live auction, and an awards ceremony. The top three foursomes from each bracket (competitive and scramble) will receive recognition.

In addition, Cleveland sports legends Jim Chones and Campy Russell of the Cleveland Cavaliers, and Jonathan Wells of The Ohio State Buckeyes will be on hand to offer their insights and field questions.

Proceeds from the Red Cross Cup will help fund vital disaster relief services.

Mike Parks, CEO of the Northeast Ohio Region of the Red Cross, stressed the need to support continuing disaster relief efforts in Dayton, where a series of tornadoes on Memorial Day left a trail of heartbreaking damage and destruction.

“Having a major national disaster relief operation in your own backyard highlights the need for ongoing support,” Mike said, noting that more than 20 volunteers from Northeast Ohio have been deployed to assist residents affected by severe weather in Ohio and Oklahoma.

“It costs money to train and deploy our volunteers when they are assigned to help those impacted by a disaster. Combined with the costs of vehicles and other equipment, the need for ongoing support for disaster relief is obvious,” Mike said.

2017 Red Cross Cup Recap

And the winners are…

…the people who need and receive services from the Red Cross of Northeast Ohio every day. They will benefit by the generosity of more than 100 golfers who took part in the annual Red Cross Cup at the famed Canterbury Golf Club on June 12.

The golfers endured 90 degree heat, and in fact, some seemed to thrive under the blistering sun.

There was a long-drive contest, with GolfTec sponsoring the Doppler Radar that measured the distance of each drive. Alex Chappel won the women’s competition, hitting a drive 181 feet. In the men’s bracket, Steve Barnes took first place with a drive of 299 feet.

There were two brackets of competitive play. The winners of the Scramble Bracket were Jay Davisson, Sean Hennessy, Ed Thompson and Bill DeSantis, who shot a 61 playing the best ball on each hole.

And the winner of the 2017 Red Cross Cup, topping the Competitive Bracket with a score of 78 was Robert Phillips.

But as mentioned at the top of this article, the real winners are the people of Northeast Ohio, who are displaced by disasters like home fires and flood waters. The money raised by events like the Red Cross Cup help provide services such as initial financial assistance, to help keep families together as they seek shelter after being driven from their homes.

Red Cross Cup Raises Funds For Disaster Relief

Money to Help People Who Suffer from Disasters Big and Small

Cancelling a golf tournament seems trivial, when considering the reason.

Flooding. Homes destroyed. Lives lost.

That’s why the Greenbrier Classic in West Virginia has been cancelled.

“We are heartbroken by the devastation that the residents of West Virginia are experiencing at this time and the reports of lives lost due to the terrible flooding,” said PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem in a statement. “Canceling The Greenbrier Classic is certainly the most prudent course of action as our foremost concern is the well-being of those who are having to live through this tragic situation. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.”

The American Red Cross responded to the flood zone immediately. Several volunteers from Northeast Ohio are among the hundreds of Red Cross workers assisting residents who lost their homes. The Red Cross is operating or supporting shelters, providing food and water, replacing prescription medications and eyeglasses, and offering mental health support, to help people cope during their darkest hours.

We are fortunate that no disaster of that magnitude has affected Northeast Ohio, and that we were able to host the Red Cross Cup last month.

One hundred and twelve golfers gathered to play on Monday, June 13th at the world renowned Canterbury Golf Club. The outing was a benefit for the American Red Cross Northeast Ohio Region.

Canterbury Golf Club is one of only three U.S. course to have hosted the five rotating Men’s Major Golf Championships, and has been the home for the Red Cross Cup for six years now. The 2016 Red Cross Cup was made possible through the generous support of Presenting Sponsor, Home Savings.

“Home Savings’ investment in the Red Cross as the presenting sponsor of this event will have a significant impact on the lives of others in Northeast Ohio,” according to John McCann, member of the Board of Directors for the Red Cross Greater Cleveland Chapter.

Additional sponsors of the 2016 Red Cross Cup included the Breakfast Sponsor, the Cleveland Zoological Society and the Caddy Sponsor, Donley’s.

Mike Parks, CEO of the Red Cross Northeast Ohio Region reflected on the impact the Red Cross and its volunteers had this season, saying “This has been a very busy spring season for the American Red Cross, with unrelenting flooding in Texas. Nearly 9,000 Red Cross workers—about 90 percent of them volunteers—including some from Northeast Ohio sprang into action to offer shelter, food and comfort in hard-hit communities.”

He continued, bringing the message back to Northeast Ohio and the impact the Red Cross has here, on a wide range of disasters, such as the three house fires that occur, on average, every day in Northeast Ohio.

“During their darkest hour, the victims of these fires become our clients, and are offered immediate financial assistance, mental health services when needed, and a way forward on their road to recovery.”

At the event proceeded, a silent auction included items such as a Chef’s’ Table for 12 at Crop Bistro in Ohio City and a Cavaliers benchwarmer package, which includes access to the Cavs bench during pregame warmups, Court Club access, and an autographed Kevin Love jersey.

The 2016 Red Cross Cup raised more than $100,000, which will be used to further aid and support the American Red Cross Mission to prevent and alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies.

Red Cross Cup Returns to Prestigious Canterbury

You’ll feel like a pro when you join the Red Cross at the legendary Canterbury Golf Club on June 13.

The Red Cross Cup has historically been one of the region’s premiere golf outings.

Canterbury Golf Club is one of only three courses in the United States to host all five rotating men’s major golf championships.

The Red Cross Cup offers golfers not only the chance to play on a great course which is typically reserved for Canterbury members only, but every player will emerge victorious with all of the funds raised going directly to the disaster relief efforts of the Red Cross of Northeast Ohio.

The dual format adopted in 2011 to accommodate both the lower handicapped competitive golfer as well as the casual golfer was well-received by our players. This year’s tournament will again offer both individual and scramble play options.

For the first time at Canterbury, a live scoring app will be available to allow players to enter their scores into their smart phones. Players will also be able to view their scores at the 2016 Red Cross Cup website.

A pre-tournament breakfast will be offered, as well as a post-play reception, featuring food, drinks and several coveted auction items, including four tickets to a Cavaliers game during the 2016-2017 season. The winning bidder will also get four pre-game benchwarmer passes, allowing access to the Cavaliers bench before the game, and a unique opportunity to get up close and personal as the players walk on and off the court during the game and as they exit the locker room afterwards.

All Red Cross Cup golfers will receive a gift bag featuring a Bluetooth speaker and a sleeve of golf balls donated by Fox Sports Ohio.
