Give blood and go Browns!

January 5, 20204 – January is National Blood Donor Month and once again the American Red Cross and the National Football League are teaming up to help patients in need by urging individuals to kick off 2024 with a blood or platelet donation.

Those who come to give from January 1-31, 2024, will automatically be entered to win a trip for two to Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas to thank you for helping during the critical post-holiday time. The winner and guest will get to enjoy Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas, access to day-of in-stadium pre-game activities, tickets to the official Super Bowl Experience, round-trip airfare to Las Vegas, three-night hotel accommodations (February 9-12, 2024), plus a $1,000 gift card for expenses.

And for only the second time since 2002, there’s a chance to see the Cleveland Browns in the Super Bowl.

The Browns clinched a post-season appearance – only the third since 1999 – when they beat the New York Jets to win a wild card spot on Thursday night, December 28.  And while post-season football has been a rare occurrence for the Browns, the need for blood is a constant.  Every two seconds, someone in this country needs a blood transfusion.

Right now, there is a critical need for all blood types ─ especially type O ─ after the busy holiday season. This time of year is challenging when it comes to collecting enough blood and platelets to meet patient need. Winter weather and an increase in illnesses like the flu can affect blood donor turnout. However, the need for donations still exists. Patients are still counting on blood being available despite these challenges.

Donors are urged to schedule an appointment now. Schedule your next blood, platelet or plasma donation by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

Team Encourages Volunteerism, Blood Donations as Training Camp Begins

Rain in Berea on Friday, July 29 did not dampen the spirits of Cleveland Browns fans who turned out for the opening of the 2016 training camp.  And once again, the Red Cross was invited to camp to encourage fans to give blood during the annual Cleveland Browns Blood Drive on Saturday, July 30.

We also invited fans to #give10.

The Browns’ #give10 initiative is meant to inspire fans to help their communities by volunteering for 10 hours each year.  And there’s no better place to begin volunteering than the American Red Cross.

“Red Cross volunteers help people in their darkest hour, following a fire, flood or other disaster that forces them from their homes,” said Pat Buckhold, Regional Volunteer Officer for the Northeast Ohio Region. “But there are many other opportunities to give back, by teaching First Aid/CPR, helping members of the military connect with their families, or offering behind the scenes support as a receptionist or caseworker.”

Volunteers also help at blood drives, like the Browns Blood Drive being held at 13 separate sites in Northeast Ohio on Saturday, July 30.  Fans who attend Browns training camp can donate blood at the Berea Recreation Center, 451 Front Street from 8:00 am-2:00 pm. All presenting donors at each blood drive location will receive a commemorative Browns T-shirt (while supplies last) and have the chance to win great Browns-related prizes.

The blood drive couldn’t be more timely.  We are in the midst of a significant blood shortage and have issued a blood emergency declaration, calling for donors to give now. Call 1-800-RED CROSS (733-2767) or log onto redcrossblood.org to make an appointment to donate blood.

Give 10 hours, help your community

The Cleveland Browns are encouraging fans to volunteer 10 hours of service in their own communities during the year.

The First and Ten initiative, which launched in June of 2014, is the first of its kind in the NFL. The Browns are hoping that fans will volunteer over 500,000 hours to communities throughout the area, and really, anywhere that a Browns Fan may live. With over 10,000 pledges already in, they are well on their way to meeting that goal.

This is a perfect partnership for the American Red Cross, which relies on volunteers to continue its mission to prevent and eliminate human suffering in the face of emergencies. Volunteers make up more than 94% of the workforce of the Red Cross.

How can you volunteer to #Give10 hours to the Red Cross in your community?

You can get started as a volunteer by going to www.redcross.org/volunteer and filling out the online form.

Then head over the Brown’s First and Ten website to register, as a Browns’ fan, to give 10 hours in your community.
