Stark County chapter hosts annual BASH

The stage is set for a rousing military medical drama inspired evening at the 2014 BASH.

Strains of Moonlight Serenade filled the main hangar at the MAPS Air Museum on Saturday, April 12th. Guests adorned in their best scrubs, khakis and Hawaiian shirts milled about perusing over 150 silent auction items.

Stark County Board Chair, Laura Mann and Chapter Executive, Kim Kroh, welcome guests from the event stage.

The BASH Auction, which pays homage to the 1970s and 80s TV show M*A*S*H, is an annual tradition for the Stark County Chapter of the Red Cross. Guests come dressed for the evening as characters from the show or just as the world of military doctors and nurses it depicted.

Tents and military vehicles set the atmosphere for BASH at the entrance to the MAPS Air Museum’s Hangar.

The event, which raised over $78,000 for Red Cross military, disaster and community services in Stark County, is a mix of both silent and live auction items. This year’s event featured a variety of items such as Disney World passes, quilts handmade by the Red Cross sewing group and the chance to adopt a puppy through the Stark County Humane Society.

Red Cross, Cleveland Fire and TCP fire safety program at Asia Plaza was a great success!

The Red Cross, along with Cleveland Fire and volunteers from TCP hosted a fire safety program at Asia Plaza in Cleveland on Saturday, April 12. The program provided an educational presentation on smoke alarm battery installation and other fire safety information. Bilingual TCP volunteers offered assistance in both Chinese and English.

TCP continues to be a proud supporter of the Red Cross Operation Save-a-Life program by co-hosting and volunteering for the “Thanks for Giving” fire safety walk located in the Chinese speaking neighborhood near the Greater Cleveland Red Cross Chapter, not far from the Asia Plaza.

Volunteers presented fire safety demonstrations including battery installation for smoke detectors.

Bilingual presenters were on hand to speak about fire safety in both Chinese and English at Saturday’s event.

Coffee, Tea, Contacts and Red Cross Services – Oh my!

In celebration of March is Red Cross month, the Lorain County Chapter opened its doors to Lorain County chamber members for the networking event, “Coffee, Tea and Contacts”. An overflow of local business members attended the event.

Much of the conversation focused on the good works performed by the Red Cross in the community including the Red Cross disaster response (and the partnership with the Animal Protection League that helps four-legged family members during a disaster), Pet First Aid training, the new Pet First Aid App, Babysitting Training Courses.

Lorain County Chapter President, Tony Gallo was also quick to mention to the 40 attendees that the April 5^th Red Cross Red Tie Event would be the event of the year (and it was!)

Ashtabula Chapter Hosts 11th annual Heroes Breakfast

On the morning of March 18, the Ashtabula County Chapter hosted its 11th Annual Heroes Breakfast.

The event, which honored 11 community heroes, was held at Our Lady Peace Community Center in Ashtabula.

Why We Red Cross: Transportation Driver

Bunny Perren volunteers as a driver for the Transportation Program with the Summit and Portage Counties Chapter.

After teaching for 38 years with Norton City Schools, Bunny Perren was ready to embark on a new adventure.

In talking to her friend, Bev Snyder (who is the Director of Community Services for the American Red Cross of Northeast Ohio) she found her next undertaking.

The Summit and Portage Counties chapter of the American Red Cross offers transportation services for non-life threatening medical appointments in Summit County. Each of the drivers who assist the chapter’s large roster of clients is a volunteer.

Bunny knew how the struggle to get a loved one to necessary medical appointments could take a toll on a family. She and her three sisters had shared the duty of transporting their mother to cancer treatments while balancing their own family and work obligations.

“I feel like we are doing a service that no one else in the community has taken the time to do,” said Bunny. For the past two years she has volunteered as a driver at least one day a week.

Bunny knows each of her clients’ stories. In the ten or so minutes it takes to get from their home to their appointment and back she listens to their tales of life, children and grandchildren. And she offers a place to vent their frustrations.

Even when she encounters a client for the first time, Bunny’s kind personality is quick to put them at ease.

“You can become their cheerleader,” she said. “I love this job!”
