1966. South Vietnam. Good news from home does a lot to boost the morale of a serviceman stationed in Vietnam. Captain John H. Orozco, of Tucson, Arizona, waves his hat when the Red Cross notifies him of the birth of a new son. Red Cross assistant field director Morris J. Atkinson, an Oklahoman from Spencer, delivers the message.
The American Red Cross is providing extensive services for members of the US Armed Forces in South Vietnam. Red Cross staff are assigned in the field with combat units, in military hospitals including two staff on the hospital ship Repose, and in Center-Clubmobile units throughout the country. Primary ARC services include emergency communications between servicemen and their families in the States, and other services in the welfare, health and recreational fields. Staff workers are assigned according to military needs and the number is now approaching 150, and will likely reach 200 by July 1, 1966. Photo by Charles Rooks/American Red Cross
